^^If I had smoke and fuel smell from my exhaust and a check engine light I don't think my car would see 60MPH till it was fixed.
Are there any strange noises you are hearing? Any modification you recently did? If you have access to a scanner (or a way to get to autozone or somethin), try to see if you can pull some codes and maybe I'd be able to help then.
I wouldn't know based on just the description, I'm sure someone else will chime in with other possibilities though.

Lacking the codes and any remarks of what brought on the symptoms (if even known) On a guess I would say you have an oddly behaving valve train.. If you are smelling fuel at the exhaust exit - then you run the risk of ignition of unspent fuel within the exhaust piping itself.. I say a compression test is in order to begin with. This shaking you speak of sounds as tho a cylinder may not be firing at higher rpms... which by the way would be symptomatic of a mis-timed valve train as well... How many miles are on the vehicle? White smoke can be the indicator of both oil or water in the combustion chamber - possible head gasket fail...
At the very least, the comments here that range all over in possibility should tell you one thing. You are past the point of hoping for the best. You need a professional inspection and opinion. Good luck

step one : check the engine codes for free at autozone
step two : find out the CEL code means
step three: replace or fix whatever the CEL says
step four: if you still have engine smoke do a compression test

Yeah that's where I was going to go too, but the gas smell is throwing me. There would be a coolant smell if anything.

Could be head gasket failure, yes....but more likely a bad sensor, causing the engine to run too rich.
Get a Nissan tech to check it out.

unless you had a coolant problem and let the car overheat..its extremely uncomon for a 350z to ruin a head gasket..
check the easy stuff first like the sensors

yes replace the sensors.. it will make your car run like new.... on a side note i've never heard of a maf sensor going bad on a 350z... problems such as these usually come about much later down the road when a car gets to be over 10 years old
have you replaced the intake system or messed with it? or sprayed any air filter cleaner? or maybe even water got in there? some things to take into account on why it went bad in the first place..
get the sensors replaced.. than check the engine codes again..
EDIT: IN b4 TYteStuff1126 hahahahaha

Too rich would produce black smoke.

yeah I was thinking this sounds like the engine is running too rich. easy enough to fix if it is.
