They actually are just as fast...almost exactly. Believe it or not, an auto Z can hang with a 6 speed, even if the 6 speed driver is right on the money with the shifting. Idk about the quarter mile, but they are super close.
Welcome btw!

Was the 03 transmission issue with manuals, autos or both?

Found a nice 03, auto with low miles at an excellent price. Would you consider spending a few more bucks to go newer and avoid any transmission issues or would these issues would have surfaced by now? The car has 22k. Were these problems with transmissions on autos as well as manuals?

My Manual Transmission didn't take a Dump until 31,600. Still got it replaced under warranty.

To my knowledge it was just the manuals that had issues. I have an 03 AT, which I bought new, and have had 0 problems with it. The whole car runs great. Your buying a used car and there is the possabliity with any used car you will have issues but I would expect any issues to have surfaced by now unless they are ones that happen at higher milage.
Getting an 06+ just for the headlights is silly. You can purchase the 06 headlights and install them directly in an 03-05 if it came with the HID headlights if it is that much of a problem.
Good luck and get what you like. It will make any issues you may have worth it more since you will enjoy the car inbetween much more.

Nowadays you can shoot for an 07/08 for relatively cheap. It's just about hunting for the right price. I love my 07 and I still haven't looked back on when I could have bought an Interlagos Fire 3 weeks before brand new.
