vs. SVT Cobra
I've an '03 6spd with about 90k miles on it. I had a run-in this weekend and decided to share.
So it's about 6PM Saturday afternoon on the 15 North in Southern California. Me and a friend were on our way back to Riverside from San Diego. We're cruising at about 75-80 MPH, not really looking to race, when suddenly a loud white mustang pulls hard past me on the left and holds about 3-4 car lengths ahead of me. So we're looking at this mustang and admiring the sound, as it really did sound bad-ass. It had a 2003 body style, but we weren't really sure whether it was a GT or whatever (not really familiar with mustangs). My friend in the passenger pulls up his shades and peers closely and says "Oh my... it's a Cobra... it says SVT Cobra"... So, not really knowing wtf SVT Cobra's are, we decided to pull up next to it (both of us agreeing we'd probably embarrass ourselves, but didn't really care).
So, we look over and there's two guys in the car, both windows rolled down. By this time I'd dropped it into 3rd at about 5k RPM. I honk 3 times and punch it, immediately taking a half-car lead. He punches it as well, and both of us pulling hard, he can't seem to reel me in. We shut it down at about 120 MPH with me still having a half-car lead. I motioned to do it one more time, so we're rolling next to eachother and before I know it, he's already honking it off and gets a hell of a jump on me by about 3/4 of a car length. Again, we pull to 120 and he holds his 3/4 car length on me. On our third and final run, I honked it off and gave him a split second jump, but like the first run, I pull about 1/2 car length in front of him and hold it up to about 115 before we both shut it down. We looked over and the guy looked frustrated. He gave us a thumbs up and went to exit. Good sport, and great car.
With only a CAI, I must say, I was proud of how the Z performed. I was expecting to get ran off the freeway lol.

sounds more like a standard GT with a modd'd exhaust, which a 03 Z will walk. A SVT cobra's are a bit faster then a Z in a straight line and the S/C Cobras are much faster.
good kill nonetheless!

03/04 cobras were s/c from the factory, and so is the GT500, but all the other cobras were NA. Some had 4 valves and at least one year had a 5.4L V8, and any Cobra in the last gen body style mustang would have faired better than the mustang you raced.
You raced a GT with exhaust like Jamie said.
I am curious what your buddy saw though. I believe a stock cobra bumper has a small "SVT" badge above the rear bumper, and the rear bumper has "COBRA" embedded in it in pretty large letters.

Even then, folks put the "cobra" rear bumper on Gt er non Gt's etc....
Most likely you didn't race a "terminator" cause those things are a beast

Yup which is retarded. As far as I can tell, the bumper looks EXACTLY the same as the GT's bumper except it says Cobra. I understand people putting Saleen parts on a non-saleen since they actually look different. I don't get the point in advertising you are faster than you really are.

its wasn't an 03 - 04 svt cobra... 03-04 svt cobras are supercharged ,6 speed , 390 hp stock.. they run 12.9 at the 1/4 mile stock.. you can compare it to a c5 zo6 they are similar... now the 02s and below cobras are garbage.. its just a gt with a couple extra horsepower no forged pistons like the 03s.. no 6 speed no superchager.. like i said its a gt with a couple extra hp..i think 330? idk
but the 03 04 svts would of ripped u apart.. i would know i was really into them and looking to buy them.. i useto be a mustang guy.. in fact i still have one that im selling.. an 95 5.0 with a 6 speed.. but anyways nice run man.. get a video camera and keep it in the car.. check out my run with a evo 9 mr in my signature..need a new cam

I can't tell you how many FAKE Saleens i see these days. It is obvious they are not real because they only have one or two cosmentic changes that say slaeen, no exhust note or S/C sound that would fit and ride on STOCK RIMS (LMAO).
I just shake my head when i see them and feel bad for them. be happy with what you have and stop trying to pretend!

350z Vs. Cobra
This story pretty closely matches one of my own-
I was in Florida on the turnpikes outside of Orlando around 1 am. Certain parts of the city are dead around this time, with law enforcement few and far in between (Hence why so many people rent Lambo's and Ferrari's :-)
My wife and I were on our way home on roads that were pretty much empty for miles. I looked in my mirror and saw a mustang flying by. I was going around 65, so I estimate that he was going around 90-100. As he passed us, I could see the "Cobra" badges, and heard the distinctive growl. I don't think it was an SVT, though.
I looked at my wife, and she said go ahead (gotta love her!). I hit the gas, and caught up to him rather quickly. We pulled head-to-head for a mile or so (around 120), and then i went ahead and floored it. I raced ahead of him by about four or five car lengths, and watched him slowly come closer. A minute or so later, he started dropping back. I looked down at the speedo and was rather surprised- 132 and counting... once it hit 135 the automatic tranny downshifted and started begging for more. I let off the gas at that point, as we were getting closer to civilization.
That was my first experience in a car that begs for more at 135mph. I've driven plenty of 'sporty' cars, but they usually start tapering off at 115-120. Not so with the Z. I was definitely proud of (and still am) choosing the Z over the other choices out there.

You guys gotta be careful. The 99-01 cobra that was out was not Supercharged but if you don't know your mustangs well they do look similar to the 03-04. The 03-04 cobra would have killed you....390HP ton's of torque and great on HWY (not to mention the whine you should have heard). But the 99-01 cobra's are junk.....they are crap!, and not SC'd. You could have raced on of those because they still have the badges. They have crappy heads and a plastic intake manifold that is not worth ****. They don't respond well to mods either.
So my guess is that it was one of the two:
-GT mustang that had the badges and body kit with slight bolt ons. Like a CAI kit and exhaust.
-or a 99-01 cobra, Same thing for mods.
Regardless though, good race and it's cool that they weren't jerkoff's.

I agree with Demitri- these were probably not top-of-the line Cobras, by any means. Then again, I have seen many powerful vehicles perform horribly due to inept drivers.

I'll say it again, you can have the most powerful, accurate and effective gun in the world and still shoot yourself in the foot if you're an idiot.

I'm curious as to what gear your AT downshifted to while going 135? Also, you were racing a Terminator with the world's sh*ttiest driver, or the vehicle was broke d*ck, or you just weren't racing an '03/'04 Cobra.

Slightly inaccurate... A C5Z (considering fairly equal drivers) will beat a a stock '03/'04 Cobra. They need a couple mods before the are equal. Power to weight makes the difference there.

well as stated in the story he had an exhuast.. and giving the benifit of the doubt ( since we obviously don't know any facts of the story and we are merely speculating) that this "cobra" had at the least an intake and exhaust which would put the "cobra" in the same class as the c5z which is what i was getting at.. not that fact which one is faster or not fast .. just stating the fact they they are in the same class and in no way compared to a fairly stock z
