Many people probably get an exhaust based upon the sound/tone quality they want to acheive. You wont get a ton of additional performance out of the Z with a new exhaust however there are some out there that will provide some additional hp. If you are adding other mods to your car it is important to plan it out realitive to the exhaust.
I hope to add a nismo exhaust this summer because I am looking to keep the same tone with a bit more growl with WOT. There are peeps here that have a variety of different exhausts who love them. You can search the subject also but I am sure some others will chime in.

the "best" exhuast for the Z would have to depend on the person your talking to since being considered the best would require an opinion and many people have difference opinions about the exhaust...
a few things to consider when thinking about one...
price
sound
looks
forget horsepower because all of the exhaust have about the same amount of minimal horsepoer uprgade...
go to youtube.com.... or streetfire.net.... and look at every single Z exhaust made to decide whick one you like it... here are some small reviews .. i don't know what you like so im just gonna throw them out there...
HKS hi-power titanium- this is the real deal.. top name.. looks awesome and sounds good.. sounds level is moderate for loudness.. 1500$$ new
Borla.. looks cool gives a deep sound.. i think these sell for 800 or so
amuse..
invidia n1.. i have this one.. its the loudest one so watch out lol 700$ new
nice jdm style.. check out the videos
apexi1 n1..same style muffler.. good jdm brand.. sounds good check out the videos
greddy evo... and injen.. don't know much about them again.. watch the videos
than you got the topspeed pro1 which is a rip off of the inividia n1
and you have the ebay mufflers which is a rip off of the HKS hi-power..
ive heard good things about them tho.. again watch the videos and decide for yourself.. peace

Well it's not an easy answer. Do you want sound, power or looks? I know a lot of people went with Borla, because it is a true dual. Other people on here like the Bassani exhaust, which has a more aggressive note and gives you good power. My personal opinion I would opt for the Zerotek exhaust Exotic car parts, porsche exhaust systems, 350z exhaust, exhaust systems, ztek exhaust, 996 exhaust systems They have video/audio clips that you can listen to. BrickyardZ turned me on to this company and I ended up buying the exhaust. But your best bet is to go to a show and ask people how they like their exhaust, they'll be more than happy to start it up for you.

Just in the door from installing the Bassani TD exhaust kit on my 06 Touring Roadster - (too bad its too cold to listen to it with the top down...) Windows open tho it was sweet... Deep with a sweet growl that is... But first let me send out some props to my son Randy - He is a top mechanic at Nissan. He was off today, with access to the rack.... He took his time (you'll note below) and completed a perfect install... The price was right - a couple of "After install beers"! Yeah Randy - And thanks!!
Now to it....
This year's Bassani TD exhaust kit for the 350Z is a little different - all their previous Ad photos shows the exit tips as single walled... But mine came with dual wall (and a phantom taper - just like the Borla system,) but that is about the only place the two systems are similar... Bassani also laser etches their exhaust tips proudly with the Bassani Logo...I'll include a photo here below...
The stock exhaust system came out simply enough... the hardest part was removing the rubber grommet hangers. It was at times a two man wrestle to get at least an minimum 1/8" clearance all around (including over the sways) while simultaneously torquing everything tight, but it's tight in the hangers in a good way - pulling on the system after install - it felt frame welded snug... On the 30 mile trip home - including over railroad tracks - NO exhaust to under-frame impacts were detected (a complaint of other buyers...) so I am more than happy with the fitment and adjustment... One might say it was made especially for the 350Z - because it was!
The sound is awesome from launch 0-40mph and from a 45 mph roll to shutdown (from fear of leaving the planet) but all in all 'first sound' was an enriching experience... More testing is recommended....
Overall my comparison today (because of the topic) is a difference between Bassani and the Borla kit... While both are lifetime warrantied 304 polished stainless steel, the Bassani is noticeably different - physically - in many ways - as follows:
The Bassani sports a Self Scavenging / Back Pressure equalizing X-pipe - to Borla's H-pipe, giving the Bassani a more exotic look overall...
Coupled with Bassani's use of smaller, lighter, separate, single, tuned mufflers bolted together in a staggered eye-catching angle - each muffler & exhaust tip, maintaining a single exhaust route overall from the Cats to the exhaust tips - minimizing bends throughout... Borla uses a dual inlet, dual chambered, single muffler config (similar to stock, except for the 2nd inlet) with two dual-walled phantom exit tips. Both system's mufflers and tips are polished to a high shine.
The Bassani website offers both the How-To video including Dyno noted increases... and a performance vehicle demonstration video for your enjoyment.
All in all I am well pleased with the purchase. It's been a long week since it's arrival christmas eve... Till install today... But the anticipation was well rewarded in that the system installed, and delivered, everything the advertisement said it would with a sweet, low, drone-free, aggressive sound.. one that was not the slightest bit annoying when rolling down the freeway at 75 phoning my wife to say I was on the way home with "Ol Gurl".
As noted below - there was an added bonus to a trip to the dealership today - and I just happened to have a camera with... They had 2 370Zs and a GTR on the lot (with a $76,000 sticker) Thought you all might like to see it... Hope this helped with decision on which exhaust system to "look into".

Those pics are from the Newport News Nissan Dealer. I just took my Z there Friday, so this is off topic but the Techs could not get my TSP to read the tire pressure after reseting the comp. Ask your son about this issue. Thanks

Dammit Darkpath, your tips look somewat thicker than mine :C And your not having that sway bar issue like me. Way to make me jealous there buddy lol jk. Glad you like it. BTW, do you think the Bassani is lighter than the stock exhaust? Mine felt a lot heavier than my stock system???

The box said the kit had a shipping weight of 83 pounds total... I don't know what the stock exhaust weighed but it has one heavy muffler... (I put mine in the attic just in case I need it later.) But it has a larger X-pipe vice Y-pipe.. and a 2nd resonator... so there is some added weight there... but over all I think the muffler config was much lighter and the Bassani set-up distribute all it's weight along the whole length of the car vice the very tail end... That has to be an improvement to handling. Since you have the system - how long did it take for it to completely break-in... I am sure it will get deeper and a bit louder over time... As far as the tips go... I mentioned that in my post... I 'thought' they were single walled... but mine are double walled... unexpected.... When I first saw that I was like "Rockin!" I am happy their is no underbody impacts.... It took two to get it that way...

Well, mine did get a bit louder but not much. It didn't take long, id say a week or so then it got a bit louder/smoother? Now i got used to the sound so i def can't tell anymore lol. But yea, sucks they couldn't have those tips in the first place. Also i see they changed the design where the pipes have more room so it doesn't hit the sway bar. I emailed bassani about that and they told me they never really get any complaint about that issue? Then why change the design lol.

The weight of the stock exhaust is 64lbs. The Borla is 12lbs lighter than stock at 52lbs.
From what I recall, the tips go right into the muffler so it would be easy to change them Toby. You should ask Bassani if they sell the tips seperately if your interested in having those. Would be an easy change unless they made diameter changes to the piping.
As for the noise, you just need to play with it until you get it right. I know a local Z shop adjusted a friends 3 times to get it right but now they install them with no problem so it can be done.
Ok folks, I have the data in front of me now and have updated the post with the actual information. Not bad, I was off by 1lb for the stock weight and 2lbs for the Borla weight. I don't know how heavy the Bassani is but I am sure shipping weight is significantly more than the actual weight.

Is it possible one of your mods... Lets say Camber set... may have changed something in some dynamic way that makes your chassis fitment different? I'll be honest with you. Since I'll never race the car, the changes I've made (intake and exhaust) are limited and only affect sound and a bit of HP and torque - like wise the exterior appearance mods change nothing on the chassis either... So I am wondering if some Mod has affected the fitment of the Bassani on your car. I mean since the tubular diameter of aftermarket sways is slightly larger - then it stands to reason Bassani would not express any universal fitment guarantee. My clearance all around was no greater than 1/8 ". So while a missing 1/8 " tooth filling may feel as vast as the Grand Canyon when touched with your tongue, an 1/8" between exhaust pipe and chassis frame is one critical, unforgiving Be'och that will have you questioning both your lineage and your intelligence - when trying to find clearance prior to bolt-up.
Good luck - it sounds like you may require a torch to heat the pipe and reshape the bend radius to get the your system to fit better...
Good Luck!!

^ i dont think my suspension had anything to do with it. A lot of people with stock Zs are having the same issue with the bassani? OH btw, i just installed my TestTipes and i am VERY impressed as to how much better the exhaust sound. I drove home thinking i have an f430 lol. The exhaust finally sounds full (if thats a word to describe it), but it completes the bassani imo. It just sounds like a race car lol. And the car def. feels faster, not a placebo effect but it's just faster lol. Plus the testpipes were like 30lbs lighter than the stock cats (no joke, those cats were heavy). Overall, im very pleased with the results. The testpipes is the cheapest mod i have on the car yet it's my favorite out of all lol.

I got resonated. But i do get some rasp at higher rpms but it's good rasp lol. Unlike those rasp you hear from riced cars and the famous e46 m3 rasp, this sounds good, deep/aggressive. It sounds like a real race car lol. It wouldn't sound as good without that minor rasp imo. But seriously, if you have the bassani, go get resonated tp to go with it. I can guarantee you that you wont be disappointed. Im still in shock as to how amazing it sounds. It's still pretty quiet when you want it to be, but damn it sounds crazy when you step on it. Honestly, it sounds like the f430 i saw revving couple months ago. 350z+Bassani+Resonated TP=HOTNESS!
